Onslow County’s flat, gently rolling terrain covers 767 square miles and is in the southeastern coastal plain of North Carolina. The climate of Onslow County is mild to moderate. The average length of the freeze-free growing season in Jacksonville is 230 days. The last freeze is around March 20th, and the earliest freeze is around November 15th. Temperatures seldom go below 20 degrees more than once or twice a year. The annual average rainfall is 54 inches, and although a few flakes of snow are seen nearly every winter, measurable amounts occur very rarely. The little snow that does fall usually melts within a short time. The average annual temperature is 63 degrees, with the coldest month being January and the hottest month being July.
Jacksonville is North Carolina’s fifteenth largest municipality. Together with our other municipalities of Holly Ridge, North Topsail Beach, Surf City, Richlands and Swansboro, Jacksonville offers a variety of housing options including; beach front, river front, rural and urban neighborhoods, townhouses and condominiums. Onslow County is home to Marine Corps Bases Camp Lejeune and Air Station New River. While the United States Marine Corps is our largest economic engine and significantly influences other economic engines in our community and the region, we do have a robust tourism sector, a growing regional retail sector and a long tradition in agri-business enterprises. We are proud of our long agrarian, marine trades and military heritage. Onslow County and its municipalities are very pro-business. The County offers local incentives based on the taxable new investment, number of new jobs created, and average wages paid.
